Electric Skateboards: How They Work
An electric skateboard looks like a regular longboard with a secret: underneath the deck sits a lithium-ion battery pack and one or two brushless motors that propel you up to 28 mph without ever pushing with your foot. A wireless handheld remote controls speed, braking, and direction. Lean to steer, squeeze the remote to accelerate, pull back to brake.
The technology is mature in 2026, but the market is flooded with cheap imports and legitimate performers side by side. This guide explains the two dominant motor technologies, what specs actually matter, and which type suits your riding style.
Hub Motors vs Belt Drive: The Core Debate
Every electric skateboard uses one of two motor configurations. Each has clear advantages and trade-offs.
Hub motors (in-wheel)
The motor is built directly into the rear wheel hub. The urethane tire wraps around the motor.
- Pros: Silent operation, no maintenance (no belts to replace), lighter weight, free-roll when battery dies (ride it like a normal board).
- Cons: Thinner urethane on the driven wheel (less vibration absorption), less torque on steep hills, cannot swap to different wheel sizes, heat buildup in the motor transfers to the wheel.
- Best for: Flat terrain commuting, stealth rides (no motor noise), riders who want minimum maintenance.
Belt drive (motor + pulley + belt)
An external motor connects to the wheel via a toothed belt and pulley system.
- Pros: More torque (handles steeper hills), full-thickness urethane wheels (better ride quality), swappable wheels (different sizes and durometers), easier to repair.
- Cons: Belt noise (audible whirring), belts wear and need replacement every 500-1000 miles ($10-15 per set), slight drag when pushing manually (the motor resists rotation).
- Best for: Hilly terrain, riders who want maximum customization, those who ride aggressively.
Which one should you choose?
If your commute is flat and under 5 miles, hub motors are ideal — silent, low maintenance, lightweight. If you face hills, want maximum power, or prefer swappable wheels, belt drive wins. Specs That Actually Matter
Motor wattage
Single motor 250-500W handles flat ground and gentle hills. Dual motor 500-1000W total handles steep hills and provides better acceleration. Dual motor also gives you redundancy — if one motor fails, the other still works.
Battery (Watt-hours)
The range indicator that matters is Wh (Watt-hours), not the advertised range. A 200Wh battery delivers roughly 10-12 miles of real-world range at moderate speed. A 400Wh battery delivers 18-22 miles. Divide Wh by 18 for a conservative mile estimate at 15 mph with a 170-lb rider on flat ground.
Deck material
Maple wood decks (7-9 ply) offer the most natural flex for shock absorption. Bamboo decks are lighter but stiffer. Carbon fiber decks are lightest and stiffest — fast riders prefer them because they transmit less energy loss through flex, but the ride is harsher on rough pavement.
Trucks and bushings
Trucks determine how the board turns. Wider trucks (10+ inches) are more stable at speed. Softer bushings make the board more responsive to turns but less stable. For beginners, medium-hard bushings and wide trucks are the safe starting point.
Remote control
The remote is your throttle, brake, and speed mode selector. Features that matter: ergonomic grip (you hold this the entire ride), battery life indicator, speed mode toggle (usually 3-4 modes from beginner to expert), regenerative braking strength adjustment. An LED screen showing speed and battery is useful but not essential.
Safety: Electric Skateboards Are Not Toys
Electric skateboards have the highest injury rate per mile of any personal electric vehicle category. The rider stands upright on a narrow platform with no handlebars, seat, or crumple zone. A fall at 20 mph on asphalt causes road rash at minimum, broken bones or head injury at worst.
- Helmet: Certified skate helmet (CPSC or ASTM F1492) minimum. Full-face for speeds above 20 mph.
- Slide gloves: Gloves with palm pucks allow you to slide on your hands during a fall instead of catching yourself (which breaks wrists).
- Knee and elbow pads: Hard-shell pads, not soft foam. At 20 mph, soft foam compresses on impact and offers minimal protection.
- Practice braking: The number one cause of skateboard crashes is inability to stop. Practice emergency braking in an empty parking lot before riding in traffic.
Maintenance
- Bearings: Clean and re-lube every 200 miles. Dirty bearings increase rolling resistance and make a grinding noise.
- Belts (belt-drive only): Inspect weekly for fraying or missing teeth. Replace every 500-1000 miles or at first sign of damage.
- Wheels: Rotate front and rear wheels every 300 miles for even wear. Replace when the urethane shows flat spots.
- Battery: Same 20-80% charging practice as all lithium vehicles. Store at 50% charge for long periods.
